Chapter 7

Xeno watched as Chris spoke to Danielle. He couldn’t hear what was said, but could tell plenty from their faces. Chris’s face was as Xeno had never seen it before. It was smug. It was vicious. It was calm. It was all these things at once, and it was not a face from which pleasant words would come. Danielle’s face...well, Danielle’s face just seemed to fall apart one step at a time. It was a beautiful thing, sickeningly beautiful. It broke Xeno’s heart to see it and yet, to his shame, lifted his spirits, as well. He felt a stirring in his belly. Chris stepped back from Danielle with such a self-satisfied smile that Xeno had a sudden and overwhelming urge to punch it clean from his face. But Xeno was not a fighter. He wasn’t even sure that he could’ve done what Danielle had accomplished a minute before, ploughing bravely into a crowd of frenzied people who looked about to kill the men they were attacking. Feeling a kind of cowardly shame, Xeno let the moment pass and watched as Chris and his entourage continued on towards the stage area.

Two of the men who had been attacked – boys, really, no older than Xeno or Danielle, were bent over the one that Chris had set upon. His face was a mess of blood and, for a terrible moment, Xeno thought that he might have been unconscious. But suddenly he stirred, mumbling something slurred and anxious. His friends pulled him unsteadily up to his feet, one on each side. Yet none of them looked great.

“What happened?” Xeno found himself asking. “Why did they do that?”

One of them looked at Xeno, his eye already beginning to swell up. “I don’t know,” he said. “He just started on us. We never said a thing.”

“He needs to go to a hospital,” said Xeno, stating the obvious.

“And your friend,” the other one started. “Tell her...” His voice trailed off and he looked over to where Chris’s group had nearly joined back up with the main crowd. Whatever the boy was going to say, he left it unsaid, as if scared that Chris and his friends would somehow hear and come back to finish what they had started. Xeno understood and recognized his gratitude. He couldn’t shake the feeling that the three men could well be dead if Danielle hadn’t intervened. Without another word, they now turned to head up and away from the beach.

Xeno turned his attention back to Danielle, who had stayed in the same spot. Her focus was now turned to face the sea. Xeno walked over and stood by her shoulder. Danielle was by no means tall. Most men of Xeno’s age would have towered over her, but not Xeno, not little, stunted Xeno. He didn’t have a medical condition to explain away his stature; he was just another funny looking little kid who spent all his time on computers because he was never going to get a girlfriend. Or, at least, not the one that he wanted.
